Dr. Penland came to Korea and assumed the responsibilities of Taejon Christian International School in September, 1996. He has more than two decades of international school experience along with a decade of educational experience in the USA. Dr. Penland came to Korea from Greensboro, North Carolina where he served seven years as principal in Grimsley High School and Eastern Guilford High School. Before his work in North Carolina, he served for ten years as a teacher, principal, and school head at Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia. Prior to working in Malaysia, he was a middle school teacher in the state of Georgia in the USA.
After obtaining a bachelor's degree in education from Toccoa Falls College in Georgia, Dr. Penland completed a master's degree in educational administration from the University of Georgia. He obtained a doctor's degree in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
As an educational trainer and consultant, Dr. Penland has worked with Korean, Malaysian, American, Australian, New Zealand, and Japanese schools, universities, and governments. He has written numerous articles for various educational publications. He has a long history with the International Baccalaureate Organization, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Southern Accrediting Commission, and the Association of Christian Schools International.
Dr. Penland was selected by Korean government partners to lead and manage Gyeonggi Suwon International School from its inception. He currently serves as both head of Gyeonggi Suwon International School (GSIS) and Taejon Christian International School (TCIS).
